What are Avocado Health Benefits?
Avocados are a savoury green fruit, rich in flavour with a creamy texture. They supply a host of vitamins, minerals, fibre and are a great source of healthy fats.
Avocados contain both mono and polyunsaturated fats.
Avocado Vitamins & Minerals
Avocados are rich in:
- Vitamin K
- Vitamin B6
- Vitamin E and
- Vitamin C.
As well as coming with this host of vitamins & minerals, as a bonus, when avocados are eaten with other fruits and vegetables they can also increase the absorption of fat-soluble nutrients from those sources.
The fats in avocado can also increase satiety, providing a feeling of fullness for longer.
Therefore, we can start to see there are a large number of avocado health benefits.
Bear In Mind...
As avocados are very high in fat content, consideration should be given to the calorie total from eating them.
Each gram of fat comes with 9 calories, so you can see how quickly you could eat a considerable number of calories from a large sized avocado.

How To Tell When Avocados Are Ripe
It can feel like a bit of a game to get the best out of avocados!
One day they are like solid bullets and the next they are mushy!
Here are some tips on how to tell when they are ripe.
If you are intending to eat them on the same day as purchase, then you want to aim for a stage 4 or stage 5. When in this stage, they will have a darker skin, made up of the colours: dark green, brown and even purple. In this state they are perfectly ripe.
You can also test the internal state by gently squeezing the outside, a ripe fruit should have a very slight give to it but not feel mushy.
Using Avocado Stalk As Ripeness Indicator
Another method to use, alongside the colour of the flesh and also the firmness, is to use the stalk.
By removing the stalk you can get a visual indication as to the internal ripeness of the fruit.
In the example below you can see when the stalk is removed that the base is a dark brown. This gives an indication that the fruit is very ripe.
Where as, the example below, shows that where the stem was attached is still a light colour which means the fruit is at perfect ripeness.
How To Speed Up Ripening Of An Avocado & Storage Tips
Here are some of our top tips to use with avocados:
Store your avocados on the counter if you plan to use them straight away.
If you want to slow the ripening process place them in the fridge on the same shelf as your other fruits.
A tip to accelerate the ripening of avocados is to place them in a fruit bowl or
brown paper bag alongside apples or bananas.
The plant hormone ethylene, that is naturally given off from these two fruits will trigger the ripening process in the avocado.
Using the bag traps the gas and accelerates the process.
If you only plan to use half of the avocado, then leave the pit in and brush the exposed flesh of the spare half with olive oil. This will prevent the fruit being exposed to air.
Store the spare half in an air tight tupperware container or wrap with cling film.
An easy trick to removing the pit is to use a sharp knife and tap it down hard onto the stone. You can then remove the stone attached to the knife.
